The 3DI695.6 digital input module belongs to the System 2005 Controllers series from B&R Automation. Installed beside CPU and output cards, it accepts line-level AC signals and forwards cleaned logic states to the backplane bus, letting a controller monitor contactors, limit switches, or other field devices that operate on mains potentials. This module occupies a single slot and is intended for cabinet-mounted systems where compact signal acquisition is required without adding separate isolation relays.

The module recognizes two input levels: a logical 0 is any voltage up to 40 VAC, while a logical 1 begins at 79 VAC. These thresholds let the card discriminate reliably even when line fluctuations are present on the network. Nominal supply compatibility is specified at 120 / 230 VAC, so either standard North American or European mains can be wired directly to the terminals. To protect controller electronics, every input path is galvanically separated from the internal bus by an optocoupler barrier rated for 2500 VAC test voltage; however, channels within the same group share a common reference to save space. The card's response time is limited by a switching delay of 50 ms, which filters short disturbances while still allowing normal industrial push-button and sensor rates.

Each board provides 16 digital inputs arranged in two groups, and each group is further insulated from the other by 500 VAC so mixed circuits can be monitored on one module. Momentary overvoltage survival reaches 264 VAC, guarding against supply transients during switching events. With a protection rating of IP20, the unit must be mounted inside an enclosure but needs no additional sealing hardware. Operation at the mains line frequency of 50 / 60 Hz aligns it with standard transformers, and power demand stays modest at 4 W from the field side and 1.5 W from the controller backplane, minimizing heat generation in densely populated racks.
