The 3DI450.6 module is a 16-channel digital input unit produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. It connects discrete sensors to the controller backplane at a nominal 24 VDC level, delivering state or pulse data needed for motion, safety, and sequence logic. By converting field wiring into clean electrical signals, the module serves as a fundamental link between the machine and the central processor in automated equipment. This role makes it suitable for reading pushbuttons, limit switches, proximity sensors, and other on/off devices that must be monitored reliably during machine operation. The module is intended for applications where dependable status detection is more important than analog measurement, so each channel reports a clear switching state to the controller.

It handles a maximum of 16 inputs. Within each isolated section the supply is 24 VDC, and both group isolation and PLC isolation help protect the processor from field transients. Channels 1 through 8 use a sink wiring scheme, while channels 9 through 16 can be wired as sink or source to accommodate mixed sensor layouts. An input filter of up to 1.2 ms on the first eight lines and up to 12 ms on the remaining lines suppresses contact bounce and short electrical noise spikes. For high-speed metering, the board exposes a pulse counter that accepts up to 100 kHz on 4 counter inputs. The terminals are arranged as 4 input groups, allowing separate commons and clearer field wiring. This arrangement lets one module gather standard machine status signals while also handling faster pulse-based feedback from selected devices.

Energy demand is low at 2.0 W, so panel thermal load remains minor. The module operates from 0 to 60 °C and can be stored between –25 and 70 °C. An IP20 protection rating requires enclosure mounting but helps prevent accidental contact with live conductors. Allowed ambient humidity spans 5% to 95% non-condensing, which supports use in humid production areas. Its modest power draw also helps when many I/O cards are mounted side by side in a compact control cabinet. Because each input group and the PLC backplane are isolated, the module helps avoid ground loops, and the mixed sink and source terminals can simplify wiring in retrofit installations.
