The 3AI780.6-L is an eight-channel analog input module produced by B&R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Installed on the system backplane, the module acquires process voltages and currents from field devices. It forwards digitized results to the CPU, enabling precise closed-loop control in industrial automation cells. Because it mounts directly in the controller rack, signal conversion occurs inside the automation system rather than in a separate external instrument.
The module’s front end contains a low-pass filter with a cutoff frequency of 80 Hz, so higher-frequency noise is attenuated before conversion. Each input is digitized by a Sigma-Delta converter that offers 16-bit resolution, giving fine measurement granularity across the full operating range. For additional signal cleanliness, the digital filter provides over 120 dB of rejection at the line frequency, which helps suppress interference before the data reaches the controller. At 25 °C, the basic accuracy is ±0.05 %, while the initial zero error is limited to ±0.005 %. Temperature effects are reduced by an offset drift of ±0.001 %/°C and a gain drift of ±0.007 %/°C. The module supplies up to 30 mA to an external incremental encoder, eliminating the need for a separate power feed. All eight inputs share a 400 Ω impedance, and they are protected against overvoltage up to 30 VDC. This combination helps preserve low-level sensor signals in cabinets where power wiring and analog lines run near each other.
Galvanic isolation is provided on several levels. Adjacent input channels withstand 600 Veff, and each channel can float 300 Veff above protective earth, so crossed signals do not propagate between inputs. The common-mode operating window reaches ±300 VAC/VDC, allowing differential measurement on power lines with substantial offset. Short-duration transients are absorbed by a pulse dielectric strength of 4000 V, which helps maintain controller integrity during switching events. This isolation structure allows the module to handle channels referenced to different potentials without coupling disturbances into neighboring measurements.
