The 3AI780.6 analog input module is produced by B&R Automation for its System 2005 Controllers series. Mounted on the local I/O rack, it captures low-level process voltages or currents, converts them to digital words, and streams the results to the controller backplane. By integrating the measurement stage directly into the controller family, the module supports closed-loop regulation, data logging, and diagnostic functions without extra signal conditioners, helping machine builders shorten wiring runs and reduce cabinet space. This arrangement lets the control system read process feedback without separate conversion hardware.
Signal processing begins with a Sigma-Delta modulator that oversamples each channel before the value is quantized at a 16-bit resolution and transferred in INT format. A basic accuracy of ±0.05% limits overall span error, while zero error is held to ±0.005% with a shorted input. The analog anti-alias chain sets a cutoff at 80 Hz, and a digital notch provides >120 dB of residual mains rejection; beyond the knee, the spectrum rolls off at 20 dB/decade. Front-end impedance tops out at 400 Ω, and an auxiliary sensor rail can supply up to 30 mA for ratiometric sensors, enabling direct wiring of displacement or pressure transducers without external power hubs.
Eight galvanically isolated channels handle field signals simultaneously, and reinforced insulation survives test pulses up to 4000 V. Continuous channel-to-ground potentials may reach 300 Veff before clearance limits are exceeded, offering headroom when probes share power with high-energy drives. Gain drift is held within ±0.007%/°C, offset drift stays at ±0.001%/°C, and peak-to-peak noise never exceeds ±0.001%, so scaling remains stable across ambient swings. The module provides 8 inputs with automatic over-range detection, supporting stable measurement and long-term data integrity in demanding industrial environments.
