The 31F681.86 interface card is produced by B & R Automation for the System 2005 Controllers series. Installed beside a CPU module, it gives the controller both Ethernet and RS232 links so process variables, recipes, and diagnostic messages can be exchanged with higher-level MES systems or local devices. By combining these two channels on a single card, the module frees other rack positions while providing the PLC with the external communication paths required for distributed industrial automation tasks.
Network traffic is handled through a shielded RJ45 port that conforms to the 10 MBit/s bandwidth of the Ethernet interface. Because the physical layer follows the 10BASE-T standard, twisted-pair cable segments up to 100 m can be used between the controller and the next active node without repeaters. The board provides one RS232 channel and one Ethernet channel, and an IF1 data LED on the faceplate flashes with activity. There is no galvanic isolation between the PLC and IF1, whereas IF2 is isolated to help limit ground loops on the second port. Power consumption is limited to 1.65 W on the 5 V backplane rail, and the enclosure meets the IP20 rating for cabinet equipment.
The serial channel terminates on a 9-pin D-Sub plug, supports online configuration, and transmits up to 115.2 kBit/s, making it suitable for operator panels or barcode scanners that rely on standard asynchronous protocols. For orderly cabinet wiring, the card installs only in the CP260 and IF260 slots, aligning its edge connector with the controller backplane bus. A female RJ45 jack is fitted on the Ethernet side, and its shielding shell is bonded to the card frame to maintain noise immunity. PLC-to-IF2 isolation helps keep external devices connected to the RS232 port decoupled from internal grounds.
