Product Description:

The MDEXE3-0 is an interface component produced by B & R Automation for the MDE Digital Input Modules series. As a receiver mounted in an auxiliary rack, it allows additional field-wired digital inputs to communicate with the primary CPU rack over the internal expansion bus. This arrangement extends the available input count without moving signal processing away from the main control platform. Its mechanical envelope matches the MULTI Module Rack, so it slides into place without extra adapters and keeps cabinet dimensions unchanged.

The fixed inter-rack harness is 0.5 m long, which keeps the link within the timing limits of the synchronous backplane. A front-mounted 25-pin D-type female connector terminates the lines coming from the main rack, and there are 2 connectors on the unit for a clear wiring layout. All conductors are routed in parallel, avoiding the scan delays associated with serial expansion and keeping signal transfer direct between racks. The front panel also provides 4 LEDs for power, bus activity, and error indication, allowing quick visual status checks without external tools. The slot immediately to the right remains unused so airflow is not blocked.

The unit draws 1.7 W from the system supply and receives that power through a dedicated backplane line rated at +8 V. It can serve as the first node in a chain of up to 3 expansion racks before signal quality or available current becomes a limiting factor. The unit functions as an Expansion Receiver Module between the main rack and downstream racks, where its internal buffers regenerate bus levels for the remainder of the chain. The rack connection sequence keeps orientation and addressing fixed by design, which helps prevent installation errors. This makes the order of connected racks predictable during setup and normal operation.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The MDEXE3-0 is an expansion receiver module for MDE digital input systems with expansion rack-to-main-rack connectivity. Parallel wiring across two 25-pin D-type female connectors supports clean signal distribution and straightforward integration. Low 1.7 W power consumption on a +8 V power rail makes the module an efficient choice for controlled rack expansion.’’
