The MDE163-0 is a rack-mount digital input module manufactured by B & R Automation for the MDE Digital Input Modules series. Installed on a controller backplane, the unit accepts discrete field signals and converts them into PLC-readable logic states, allowing machinery to monitor limit switches, optical sensors, and safety contacts with minimal wiring. Concentrating multiple channels on one printed-circuit assembly streamlines cabinet layouts and preserves space in automated lines and process skids. This arrangement also lets the controller read multiple field contacts without separate signal-conditioning hardware.

This module provides 16 sink-type inputs referenced to GND. Each channel recognizes an active state once the terminal reaches the minimum input voltage of 18 VDC, while normal operation is based on 24 VDC. The optically coupled front end creates a 2500 V barrier between the field electronics and the controller logic, though there is no isolation between individual inputs. A state change is reported after a 10 msec low-to-high delay, and contact release is qualified with a 15 msec high-to-low filter to suppress bounce. The debounce circuitry resets after a peak repeat interval of 100 msec, ensuring consecutive events are captured without overlap while the sink topology simplifies connection of PNP sensors.

Cabinet safety is reinforced by a 1500 V isolation rating between the housing and grounded metal parts. Each channel tolerates surge transients up to 500 V for 50 µsec without damage, and the PLC backplane remains galvanically isolated through an optocoupler. The board draws only 0.2 W from the dedicated +8 V rail, which helps limit enclosure temperature rise during continuous operation. LED status indicators present real-time channel activity, and the circuitry remains reliable up to the absolute limit of 30 VDC applied to any input. Reference potential is fixed at GND, which helps keep field wiring consistent across the input points.
