Product Description:

B&R Automation's MCPZL2-0 is a plug-in counter input module in the ECZ Multi Analog Modules series. The unit mounts on an EC backplane and accepts fast 24-volt field signals from proximity switches, photoelectric sensors, or encoder index tracks. Within automated packaging, material handling, or assembly cells, it tallies pulses so the PLC can initiate motion sequences, reject parts, or measure line speed during operation. Channel-to-channel and channel-to-PLC isolation break ground loops and safeguard both the module and sensitive logic circuitry against electrical transients.

Each of the six counting paths is implemented as a 16-bit binary register that decrements with every recognized edge, giving a range from 65,535 to zero before rollover. Because the inputs are rated for frequencies up to 20 kHz, the module can resolve rapid pulse trains produced by fine-pitch encoders or turbine flow meters without missing events. Nominal input voltage is 24 V, and each channel draws only 10 mA, which limits the load placed on sensor outputs. To distinguish low-level noise from a valid negative transition, the circuit treats any input below 6.5 V as a logical low, which helps maintain clean edge detection on long cable runs. A decrementing count style lets the ladder program detect an underrun condition immediately when the register reaches zero.

The hardware supports 6 independent counters, allowing one card to service multiple axes or product lanes while maintaining isolation between measurements. A rising edge is latched only after the voltage surpasses 12.5 V, so indeterminate mid-level voltages are ignored and chattering contacts do not introduce ghost counts. Overvoltage suppression withstands field excursions up to 30 V, which helps prevent damage when sensors are wired to unregulated supplies. Two status LEDs show signal presence and counter activity on each channel, simplifying setup and troubleshooting without external meters.
