Product Description:

The MCPNC4-1 is an analog and counter expansion module produced by B & R Automation for the ECZ Multi Analog Modules series. Integrating directly with Base Unit C backplanes, it combines a single analog output channel with position counting to bridge velocity feedback and actuation in compact machinery. In an automation cell, the module converts digital setpoints into process-level voltages while simultaneously recording encoder pulses, enabling synchronized analog control and motion monitoring across compact motion and process-control tasks.

On the output side, the module generates an 11-bit value that is converted to a symmetrical ±10 V signal, giving sufficient granularity for proportional valves or reference inputs. For counting tasks, its internal register is 24-bit binary, so rollover occurs only after 16,777,216 increments, which suits long travel axes and extended measurement sequences. The encoder wiring lands on a 9-pin D-SUB socket, and a differential receiver accepts edge rates up to the 200 kHz maximum count rate. With one analog channel and one incremental encoder input, the module can pair voltage control with position tracking without using separate I/O slots. During normal sampling, the module draws 5 mA from the 15 V rail and 2 mA from the 5 V rail, which keeps its local power demand low.

Distance between the encoder and module can reach 50 m before signal conditioning is required, allowing installation on distributed carriages or remote sensing points. When high-speed counts coincide with analog updates, the logic must still respect a reference pulse width of >50 µs to maintain accurate homing. Supply headroom is maintained by permitting load currents up to 300 mA on the 15 V line and 500 mA on the 5 V line, which helps protect upstream regulators. Because the module does not provide galvanic isolation, the encoder, counter, and output share a common ground, so wiring must be arranged carefully to reduce noise coupling. A 50 kHz input frequency rating also supports reliable operation with slower sensor signals.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The MCPNC4-1 is an ECZ multi analog module from B & R Automation built for encoder interfacing and analog signal output tasks. A 24-bit binary counter paired with a 200 kHz max count rate gives the module precise, responsive position processing. The 11-bit analog output with a ±10 V range makes the MCPNC4-1 a strong choice for compact motion and signal applications.’’
