Product Description:

The ECA244-0 module is produced by B & R Automation for the ECZ Multi Analog Modules series. It is a field I/O component that provides high-density DC switching outputs, letting a controller drive actuators, lamps, and solenoids directly on a machine. By concentrating multiple transistor outputs in one slice, the unit reduces panel space and wiring while still delivering the on/off performance required in distributed industrial automation. The module mounts on standard backplanes and ties into the PLC through a dedicated system bus.

Its per-channel load capacity is 0.5 A, and the cumulative current for all outputs is limited to 6 A. This ceiling helps prevent trace overheating on the internal power plane. Each transistor channel switches DC loads up to 30 VDC. Logic integrity is maintained within an admissible supply window that begins at 18 VDC and centers on the nominal 24 VDC commonly used in control cabinets. Because the outputs share a common supply, there is no output-to-output isolation, but galvanic separation from the PLC backplane helps keep field faults from reaching controller electronics.

The slice presents 24 individually reported channels whose states are shown by front-panel LEDs, allowing quick status checks at the module front. When the PLC requests activation, a turn-on delay of 100 µsec elapses before the transistor reaches saturation, which is fast enough for most motion interlock and gate control tasks. Under load, the driver drops <1 V at 0.5 A, which helps minimize power loss and heat generation. Module quiescent draw is only 0.3 W at +8 V, so overall cabinet consumption stays low. An external protection circuit must be added to suppress inductive kickback on inductive loads.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The ECA244-0 is a B & R Automation transistor output module with 24 output channels and output-PLC isolation. A 24 VDC nominal switch voltage and 100 µsec turn-on delay give the module crisp, predictable response in fast control tasks. External protection circuitry and 0.5 A max current per output make the ECA244-0 a strong choice for dense, dependable output distribution.’’
