Internal Product Review

The ECPNC3-0 is a B & R Automation multi control module designed for precise encoder interfacing, with support for 1 incremental encoder and a 24-bit binary counting range. Galvanic isolation and a maximum count frequency of 200 kHz make the module well suited for stable high-speed signal processing. A ±10 V analog output with 10-bit + sign resolution adds useful control flexibility, making the module a strong choice for motion-oriented automation tasks.

Product Description:

The ECPNC3-0 is a control module from B&R Automation’s ECP Multi Control Modules series. It is designed to interface incremental encoders and to provide analog command signals that drive servo inverters or closed-loop regulators in automated machinery. By combining high-resolution counting with a bipolar analog output stage, the module supports precise velocity or position feedback tasks commonly used in packaging lines, pick-and-place gantries, and coordinated multi-axis systems.

The electronics accept a supply range of 18 to 30 VDC, allowing operation from the common 24 V control bus without sensitivity to moderate line drops. Each analog channel has a resolution of 10-bit + sign, so 1,024 magnitude steps are available in both positive and negative directions, and the output range extends across ±10 V for direct connection to standard servo amplifiers. Position information is accumulated in a 24-bit binary counter, which allows more than sixteen million distinct positions to be tracked before rollover. Incoming encoder pulses are processed at up to 200 kHz, supporting fine linear scales or high-speed motors, and the sensor leads terminate on a compact 9-pin D-type female connector that simplifies panel wiring.

The input stage can still recognize channel edges at 50 kHz when differential signals are not available. Reliable feedback is maintained over cable runs as long as 50 m when the remote transducer is powered by the module’s 24 V encoder supply. Galvanic isolation separates field wiring from logic references to limit ground loops, while a phase displacement window of 90° ±30° lets the decoder tolerate skew between A and B tracks. Drift is minimized by an offset of <1 mV, and digital rounding remains below one least significant count because the quantization error is less than one bit.
