Product Description:
The ECPNC1-1 module is produced by B&R Automation as part of the ECP Multi Control Modules series. It serves as a compact I/O and position-processing unit that links motion axes, human interfaces, and higher-level PLCs. Within an automation cell, the module conditions one analog channel, captures one incremental encoder, and provides a local display for numeric status codes. By combining analog actuation and high-resolution feedback in the same housing, the unit simplifies wiring and reduces the number of distributed control nodes on a machine.
The analog stage delivers a programmable output swing of ±10 V, allowing direct control of proportional valves or servo amplifiers that expect a symmetric voltage command. Its conversion depth is 11 bit, so the 20 V span is divided into 2048 discrete steps for fine setpoint trimming. The module has 1 analog output, which helps reserve a dedicated channel for a critical actuator. Supervisory feedback appears on the front panel through a 6-digit 7-segment readout that can show process values, error numbers, or diagnostic counters without an external HMI. Position or speed information is accepted on the encoder port with a quantization of 24 bit, and this granularity supports very fine scaling when matched to the machine pitch or gear ratio.
The encoder receiver is not electrically isolated, meaning signal ground must share a common reference with the controller backplane to avoid differential noise. Its decoding logic follows the incremental format, processing A, B, and optional index tracks while remaining compatible with differential RS-422 or single-ended TTL levels. A built-in sensor supply of 5 to 15 VDC powers many common encoders, removing the need for an auxiliary regulator. Pulses can be captured accurately up to 50 kHz, enabling reliable velocity measurement on moderate-speed rotary axes or linear stages without missing counts.
