Internal Product Review

The ECE161-0 is a B & R Automation multi control module with 16 inputs and a 24 VDC/AC nominal input voltage. Optocoupler input-to-PLC isolation and 2500 V logic isolation support clean signal transfer and solid electrical separation in control cabinets. A 10 msec on delay makes the module a strong option for dependable sink/source interfacing.

Product Description:

The ECE161-0 is a digital input module manufactured by B&R Automation for the ECP Multi Control Modules series. It extends a controller with sixteen electrically isolated input points and suits distributed machine or process panels where compact DIN-rail devices are preferred. By converting field-level voltages into clean logic signals, the board allows the main CPU to monitor limit switches, proximity sensors, and pushbuttons without additional relays. The enclosure integrates directly with the system backplane, simplifying installation inside control cabinets and providing a consistent reference potential for each connected sensor.

This module provides 16 optically isolated inputs for sinking or sourcing signals. Each channel turns on once the applied line exceeds the ON threshold of 14 VDC / 16 VAC and turns off below 9 VDC/AC. The preferred operating point is 24 VDC/AC, yet the circuitry withstands up to 30 VDC / 28 VAC and works down to a minimum of 14 VDC / 19 VAC. A field-to-housing barrier rated at 1500 V shields the backplane against ground shifts, and the optocouplers isolate the inputs from the PLC. Propagation remains predictable, with an on delay of 10 msec and an off delay of 20 msec, which helps match the scan period of the control task to external device dynamics.

The logic side adds a second insulation layer of 2500 V, preventing crosstalk between the module bus and high-energy field wiring. Internal electronics draw only 0.8 W from the +15 V rail and 0.2 W from the +8 V rail, limiting thermal load in densely packed enclosures. Inputs can endure surge pulses of 500 V / 50 µsec, so the card tolerates nearby inductive load switching. Wiring may reference system ground or a floating +24 VDC line, and the selectable sink/source mode supports mixed NPN and PNP sensors without rewiring.
