The MCMAEB-0 module from B&R Automation belongs to the DI Digital Input PLC Modules series and is intended for rack-mounted control systems that need integrated discrete I/O. It combines field-side terminations and logic-level circuitry in one housing so that a central CPU can sample sensors and energize actuators without external relays. By concentrating both input conditioning and output drivers on a single card, the unit streamlines wiring and reduces the DIN-rail footprint in automated cells and conveyor stations.
On the input side, the module presents 16 digital channels rated for 24 VDC field signals. Each input draws only 8 mA, limiting the load that proximity switches or photo-eyes place on their source devices. A built-in filtering period of 5 msec suppresses contact bounce and short noise bursts before the signal is transferred to the controller. The inputs are separated from the backplane by an optocoupler, providing galvanic isolation that protects the CPU from external transients. Thresholds are set at 12 VDC maximum for an OFF state and 16 VDC minimum for an ON state, while accidental overvoltage up to 30 VDC can be tolerated without damage. Status for every channel is shown on 16 front LEDs, and wiring terminates on a 37-pin female D-type connector with the common reference tied to the module’s GND rail.
The output section shares the same 37-pin header and offers 16 sinks that switch loads at an unregulated 24 VDC output. Each transistor can deliver 0.5 A continuously, and the combined load across all channels must stay below 8 A. To protect both wiring and semiconductors, the driver stage integrates short-circuit and overvoltage protection, and its switching circuits reference the field supply at GND to ensure predictable logic levels. With these limits, the module can drive indicators, relays, or small solenoids while keeping cable count equal to the input side, which helps simplify panel layout.
