The MCE16A-1 is a digital input module produced by B & R Automation within the DI Digital Input PLC Modules series. It interfaces low-voltage sensor lines, converting discrete states into logic levels readable by a programmable controller. In a factory I/O rack the module supplies fast signal acquisition for safety interlocks or conveyor limits. By separating sensing circuitry from the CPU board, it also lowers electromagnetic interference and allows defective cards to be replaced without rewiring the control cabinet.
Electrical performance centers on a nominal field voltage of 24 VDC, with the circuitry tolerating excursions down to 16 VDC and up to 30 VDC. A low-to-high transition is recognized once the line reaches the same 16 VDC threshold, so wiring resistance has little effect on detection. The board accepts 16 independent channels and routes each through optically isolated drivers, with channel-to-CPU separation provided by Yes (Optocoupler) isolation while no input-to-input barrier is included. Change-of-state reporting sends only transitions to the processor, trimming back-plane traffic. Base units A or C can host the card, the front panel carries LED indicators for energized lines, and the absence of input grouping lets any terminal be paired with any sensor.
Integration details are finalized by the back-plane interface. Status words are moved Through CPU, and the module occupies slots 0 to 5 in the local rack, giving designers placement flexibility next to analog or motion cards. All inputs share the reference node GND, a convention that simplifies common-mode noise analysis when several field devices are powered from the same supply. The hardware recognizes a high-to-low return at 12 VDC, enabling deterministic debounce routines without depending on software thresholds. These electrical limits, together with optically reported edges, allow deterministic scan times while the CPU concentrates on higher-level sequencing.
