Product Description:
The APC820 industrial PC is produced by B&R Automation as part of the APC Industrial Automation PC Units series. It is intended to serve as the central controller in machine cells, uniting real-time control, fieldbus routing, and visualization on one platform. In an automation system, it drives PLC logic, coordinates servo axes, and outputs video over the SDL, DVI, or monitor port to distributed operator panels, allowing deterministic processing and user interaction to be handled by a single enclosure.
A built-in buffer capacitor keeps the system powered for up to 10 ms, enabling an orderly shutdown if the 24 V line drops. The CAN interface supports frame traffic at up to 500 kbit/s, which is suitable for moderate-bandwidth motion or sensor networks. Removable storage is provided by 2 CompactFlash slots, allowing the operating system to reside on one card while recipe data is stored on the second. Two RJ45 connectors share a Gigabit controller that negotiates 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, so the controller can separate plant and IT traffic across different subnets. During normal operation, the backplane draws a nominal 5 A, which is relevant when sizing the 24 V cabinet supply and energy-buffering devices. The chassis also provides five USB connectors for peripheral devices, and the port mix supports both information traffic and real-time network tasks.
The logic board is energized from a 24 VDC ±25% source and is housed in an enclosure rated at IP20, so it must be installed inside a closed control cabinet. A dedicated SRAM block of 1 MB handles retentive variables without wearing the CompactFlash media, and the permitted storage temperature range of –20 to 60 °C supports unpowered warehouse or transit conditions. An Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 drives the panel interface, and one internal PCIe C slot allows expansion with fieldbus or motion cards, while the single Powerlink port provides deterministic Ethernet communication with drives.
