Product Description:
B&R Automation manufactures the 8BAC0120.001-2 in the 8BA ACOPOS Modules series. Installed in an ACOPOS drive stack, this communication and feedback module conditions encoder signals and distributes low-power supply voltages to connected transducers. Its role in industrial automation is to present precise position information from servo motors to the drive processor while also providing galvanically isolated status communication over the backplane, reducing wiring effort in multi-axis packaging, printing, and material-handling machines.
Data transfer from the module to the base unit occurs at 6.25 Mbit/s, a baud rate that matches the deterministic cycle times required for synchronous axis control. The front interface supports the EnDat 2.2 serial protocol, allowing automatic encoder parameter detection and cyclic redundancy checks. Electrical layers use RS485 differential signaling to maintain immunity against noise on long cable runs. The module supplies 12.5 V to the connected encoder, eliminating the need for a separate power rail, and the integrated UP/DN LEDs provide immediate indication of counting direction or fault states. Continuous encoder monitoring is active, and built-in overload and short-circuit protection isolate faults before they propagate to the drive backplane.
A 9-pin male D-sub connector provides the plug-in point for shielded encoder cabling, and the module is keyed for installation only in Slots 1 and 2 of the ACOPOS rack, which helps prevent wiring errors when multiple feedback channels are required. Continuous service is rated up to 55 °C, so the surrounding cabinet must remove drive losses to stay within that temperature limit. During shipping and storage, the electronics tolerate ambient temperatures up to 70 °C and relative humidity of 95% at 40 °C without condensation, allowing the unit to move between production sites or spare parts depots without climate-controlled packaging.
