B & R Automation manufactures the 4P3040.01-490 operator panel as part of the 4P Power Panels series. This unit combines visualization, user interaction, and integrated control so it can replace a small PLC in compact machines. By embedding CPU resources with onboard memory and I/O, the product allows real-time monitoring and command of industrial processes directly from the cabinet door or machine fascia. It serves as the primary human-machine interface, presenting system status on its LCD while simultaneously processing field signals for sequence logic.

The display subsystem is a monochrome LCD that reaches 150 cd/m² of luminance, giving clear symbols in typical factory light. Its cold-cathode backlight is specified for 50,000 h of service, which translates into years of continuous shift operation before replacement is required. Graphics are rendered at 320 x 240 px, sufficient for text, bar graphs, and simple mimic diagrams. For direct wiring to sensors, the panel furnishes 10 opto-isolated digital inputs, and it can drive actuators through 8 + 1 dry-relay outputs, allowing mixed transistor and potential-free switching. These local channels let machines start, stop, or acknowledge alarms without additional interface modules.

The controller portion is supplied from a nominal 24 VDC source and draws up to 0.4 A during full backlight and I/O activity. Program and configuration data reside in 600 kB of FlashPROM reserved for the system and 1.4 MB of FlashPROM available to the user, while dynamic variables occupy 700 kB of SRAM so recipes and counters retain their values during runtime. External communication is handled over an RS232 serial port that can exchange packets at up to 115.2 kbit/s, enabling parameter download or SCADA links. The front bezel measures 5.7 in diagonally and is sealed to the machine face with an IP65 gasket, resisting dust and low-pressure water jets when correctly mounted.
