B&R Automation's 4P3040.00-K21 is an operator panel-controller in the 4P Power Panels series. Designed for machine-level automation, the unit combines a touchscreen HMI with an integrated processor so that motion, sequence control, and visualization reside in a single enclosure. This arrangement reduces wiring between field devices and the cabinet while allowing decentralized installation close to sensors and actuators on production lines where quick access to diagnostic data and compact control hardware are critical. The integrated format also keeps the interface and control logic together, which helps simplify local machine layouts.

The panel operates from a 24 VDC supply and draws 0.4 A under nominal load. Its logic executes every instruction in 0.4 µs, delivering deterministic response for time-sensitive motion steps. Field wiring terminates on 10 digital inputs and 8 digital outputs, allowing direct connection of limit switches, valves, and light curtains without remote I/O blocks. The laminated front meets IP65, so the screen and keys resist dust and washdown sprays on the machine face. Six expansion slots accommodate additional I/O or communication cards, while an internal 600 KByte FlashPROM stores the real-time operating system and a separate 1.4 MByte FlashPROM retains user programs when power is removed.

The unit includes 1 CAN channel for exchanging variables with drives or remote modules at up to 500 kBaud. A dedicated RS-232 port handles point-to-point diagnostics at up to 115.2 kBaud, which supports direct serial communication with compatible equipment. For portable storage, the housing provides a single PCMCIA slot, and 3 V / 950 mAh of lithium battery capacity preserves the real-time clock during power loss. The controller also allocates 700 KByte of SRAM for fast variables, allowing trend data to be buffered locally and synchronized later without external memory cards.
