The 4P0420.00-490 operator interface unit with integrated control functions is made by B & R Automation as part of the 4P Power Panels series. It combines a monochrome LCD and resident I/O so a machine builder can issue commands, view status messages, and execute logic in a single enclosure. The panel is installed on production lines to coordinate sensors, actuators, and fieldbus devices, giving operators a direct text-based window into process variables while letting the controller handle local sequencing tasks.

Internal electronics are energized from a 24 VDC supply, and the board limits consumption to 20 W, making the panel easy to share with low-power sensor loops. The monochrome LCD presents up to 4 × 20 characters, which is enough room for clear alarm text and parameter values. Local I/O is included: there are 10 digital inputs that read sink-type field devices and 8 digital outputs for actuating relays or indicator lamps. Each output channel sustains a nominal 0.4 A, so modest solenoids can be switched without an additional driver stage. Together these resources allow basic machine sequences to be executed inside the panel rather than in a remote rack.

Field connections are protected by an IP65 aluminum front, so washdown splashes do not reach the electronics. Communication with higher-level PLCs is possible through an integrated CAN interface that negotiates up to 500 kbit/s as well as an RS-232 port that reaches 115.2 kbit/s for service or legacy devices. Runtime variables persist in 700 kB SRAM while application code is stored in 1.4 MB of FlashPROM, both of which can be expanded through a single PC card slot. Six screw-in module slots accept additional functions, and a dedicated relay contact offers one form-C signal for alarms or interlocks, letting the panel finish small-scale control tasks without extra hardware.
