B & R Automation manufactures the 4E0040.01-090 as part of the 4E0 PanelWare Accessories series. The unit is a front-panel keypad and indicator module intended for operator stations in machine control cabinets across industrial automation projects. It provides fixed keys and status LEDs so field personnel can send commands and receive visual feedback without opening the enclosure. By mounting flush within the familiar 96 mm square cutout, the module simplifies the addition of basic human-machine interaction points to programmable controllers.

The housing measures 96 x 96 x 35 mm, allowing installation in shallow doors where depth is limited. During normal operation it draws only 1.5 mA at 24 VDC, so power loss through the control supply bus is negligible. Four operator inputs are available through 4 function keys that use a Short Stroke mechanism to achieve low actuation force and long cycle life. Each key is paired with a status lamp; the lamps emit a Yellow signal that remains visible in bright ambient light while staying within ergonomic glare limits. When a lamp is energized the drive circuit sinks 3 mA, enabling the LEDs to be wired directly to low-side PLC transistor outputs.

The module remains operational between 0 to 50 °C, so it can be mounted in cabinets that are cooled but not actively conditioned. Key travel and LED brightness are unaffected by ambient moisture from 5 to 95 % RH during service, and the same humidity window is accepted when the device is disconnected for storage. Long-term warehousing is supported from -20 to 60 °C without performance degradation. Four front label fields let technicians mark each key, and user labeling can be completed through slide-in strips without dismantling the unit. The panel carries four LEDs total, providing direct visual acknowledgment for every key press.
