The EK1000 is an Ethernet coupler that enables Ethernet communication. The coupler connects EtherCAT terminals with time-sensitive networking (TSN) networks. In addition to TSN networks, the system is also compatible with unmanaged switch networks. The device transfers data through a shielded Ethernet cable. The system’s data transfer rate is 100 MB/sec and it does not require any configuration. The coupler can operate in a 0 ᵒC to 55 ᵒC temperature range and requires a 24 VDC power supply for operation. The EK1000’s shock resistance and EMC immunity complies with European standards and its ingress protectioncategory is IP 20. The device has a CE approval and it comes with a 500 V electrical isolation between the power contact and supply voltage. This model can be stored in a -25 ᵒC to 85 ᵒC temperature range and can operate in conditions with a relative humidity of up to 95 %.
EtherCAT is a very useful medium for combining small data packets of analog and digital inputs into a complete process image whereas TSN is capable of prioritizing the transport of Ethernettelegrams through a switched network. Since the EK1000 can link EtherCAT and TSN, it effectively combines the benefits of the two. The EK1000 has two RJ 45 ports. One port is used to connect the system with the TSN network and the other port activates the network extensions. With the EK1000, the TSN networks are enabled in the TwinCATsoftware that greatly facilitates the management of the networks.
