The AX5118-0000-0000 is a digital servo drive produced by Beckhoff in the AX Digital Servo Drives series. Intended for high-performance motion control, the unit regulates three-phase motors by converting a 400 V AC supply into a controlled DC link and precision-modulated output phases. Within an automation cell, it provides the closed-loop torque, velocity, and position control required for packaging machines, material-handling axes, and other synchronized equipment.
The drive can deliver up to 12.5 kVA of apparent power at 400 V while supplying a nominal output current of 18 A and momentary peaks of 36 A during acceleration or load surges. This combination supports rapid speed changes and gives the axis current reserve for short overload events without interrupting closed-loop control. Its DC link is rated for a maximum of 875 VDC, giving headroom for regenerative energy and supply fluctuations. Eight digital inputs allow direct acceptance of limit switches or PLC signals, and an internal brake chopper dissipates up to 200 W continuously. That arrangement allows the drive to respond directly to machine interlocks and feedback devices without requiring separate interface hardware for every signal. Mechanical integration is aided by a width of 185 mm, a height of 317.70 mm, and a depth of 232 mm without connectors, so multiple axes can mount side by side in a control cabinet. The sensor interface provides 24 VDC at 1 A for encoders, and the front panel offers status LEDs plus basic parameter access. Thermal design limits internal power loss to 255 W, which is removed by top-mounted convection slots.
For emergency stops or fast deceleration, the external braking channel handles up to 32 kW when a resistor of at least 22 Ω is installed. Two digital outputs can source a maximum of 0.5 A, enabling relay coils or signal lamps without extra drivers. This allows the drive to pass ready or fault signals to surrounding equipment with minimal additional wiring. The housing carries an IP20 protection rating, so it must be installed inside an electrical enclosure yet still allows direct access for wiring and service.
